In the movie, Coraline moves into a new apartment with her family in Ashland, Oregon. Despite living in her "Pink Palace" in Pontiac, Michigan, her world has changed. With her mother and father being so into their work life, Coraline feels like they have no time for her.
While she is exploring the house, she notices a little door, and behind it is a brick wall.
But when she awakes one night do to the noise she hears, that changes.
When she awakes, she notices a little rat, and she thinks it wants her to follow it. It leads her to the door, but when she sees it this time it is different.
The open door leads her to a new place, looking much like her actual home, Coraline is confused.
When she meets her "other" mother, she realizes its not the same as her own home.
Coraline is introduced to a whole new world. She is introduced to the button eyed family, which is just like her own. But her parents have very exciting lives, that include Coraline very much.
When she meets her "other" neighbors, they are also much different. Her downstairs neighbors, Miss Spink and Forcible, are talented actresses and put on a great show for Coraline.

They want her to stay and become a button eye with them. Having to sew on button eyes, Coraline realizes its not what she wants and she wants to leave the new world.
But when she tries to go back, her "other" mother tries to stop her, along with the rest of the "other" people.

When Coraline finally arrives back at her real home, she is thrilled and realizes that she doesnt want to live anywhere but her own home in Ashland, Oregon.
